Paper industry

Cooling solutions for the paper industry

The paper industry generally handles large flows of water for its manufacturing processes. This industry is characterized by polluted water, with a high load of suspended solids, such as cellulose fiber particles, pollutants and sediments. It may also include dissolved solids.

tecnologías de refrigeracón para la industria papelera

Installation context examples

Paper, pulp processing, bleaching and felt mills

Advantages

Low installation costs, easy maintenance, systems designed to handle aggressive waters

Recommended technologies

Modular industrial cooling towers, such as the CTFP, cooling towers for large flow rates, assembled in the field when cooling demand is high and available space permits

Description of the process

Cooling in the paper industry

  1. In paper mills, liquid ring vacuum pumps play a key role in the process of drying paper before it is wound onto reels and in the manufacture of corrugated board. These pumps generate the vacuum needed to remove residual moisture from the paper, helping to dry it at various stages of the process.
  2. Drying is carried out by means of flat tables, cylinders and presses equipped with tiny perforations. Through these holes, the water that remains impregnated in the paper after its manufacture is sucked out thanks to the vacuum generated by the pumps.
  3. During this process, it is common for cellulose residue to be sucked in, which can contaminate the cooling water. This increases the risk of organic mucilage formation in the cooling tower, which requires proper maintenance to ensure system efficiency.
  4. It is essential to have adequate fillers for suspended solids, such as GS grid fillers or the drip filler used by Torraval.

Our cooling systems for
the paper industry

Water quality is essential in the paper industry, poor water quality can cause defects in the quality of the paper (odors, corrosion, scale …), low resistance and possible breakage. Torraval, as a manufacturer of cooling towers can not act on the quality of the water supply, nor on how the fiber is received, stored and treated, but it can influence by improving the circulating water

What problems can water have in a paper process?

  • Conflicting, dirty circulating water (vs. feed)
  • Environmental dirt
  • With fibers
  • Suspended solids
  • Dissolved and colloidal matter

As a consequence of these problems there can be a loss of cooling efficiency and high maintenance costs. For this reason, not all towers are suitable for cooling processes in the paper industry.

The Torraval CTFP tower is specially designed for the worst operating conditions:

  • Waters with fibers
  • Splash or “drip” type filling
  • No gasket but ‘L’ profile PVC “beds”
  • Counterflow air. Wide water-air passage
  • Guarantee of constant performance over time
  • No clogging, typical in conventional fills
  • Water distribution system through open channels
  • Mechanical equipment at ground level
  • 100% GRP, corrosion-free
