Installation of a cooling tower with permanent magnet engines

One of our latest jobs consisted of the supply, assembly and commissioning of cooling towers for a customer in the chemical sector. The company specializes in the production of elastomers, synthetic rubbers and thermoplastic polymers and needed to install a cooling system for its new SBR styrene-butadiene rubber production line, which will be operational in early 2025. Thanks to this new installation, the customer will increase its production capacity by 20,000 tons.

Cooling tower installation process in a chemical plant

For this project, we installed a cooling tower equipped with permanent magnet engines (PMSM). This choice, a must for the customer, represents a significant technological advancement and continuous improvement.

PMSM permanent magnet engines are becoming increasingly popular in industrial applications, including cooling towers where they are mainly used to drive fans. These devices make it possible to increase the efficiency of production processes and reduce cooling tower maintenance costs.

Advantages of using PMSM permanent magnet engines

  1. In cooling towers, permanent magnet engines are used to apply forced and controlled ventilation. By adjusting the fan speed according to ambient conditions, these engines are able to maintain optimum airflow with lower energy consumption and can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% compared to traditional engines.
  2. These engines are ideal in situations where frequent starts and stops are required or where the fan must operate over a wide range of speeds. They allow speed modulation without risk of overheating and without loss of performance.
  3. Permanent magnet engines have less wear because they have no slip rings, brushes or other parts subject to mechanical friction. This means less maintenance, increasing their service life and reducing maintenance costs.
  4. They generate less noise than induction engines; an important feature for noise-sensitive industrial facilities, such as hospitals or residential areas.
  5. They are more compact and lighter than traditional engines, as the need for mechanical transmissions and gearboxes is eliminated.

The implementation of permanent magnet egines in cooling towers is a technological breakthrough and an improvement opportunity for industrial plants with cooling needs. These motors offer an optimized technical solution with less environmental impact, thus meeting today’s demands for efficiency and sustainability.

At Torraval, we are at the forefront of cooling trends and are committed to solutions that improve our customers’ productivity.
