Torraval Cooling supplies a cooling tower for the flagship carbon capture and utilization project at the ArcelorMittal Ghent plant.
THE CLIENT
Arcelor Mittal launches an innovative carbon capture and utilization project at its metallurgical plant in Ghent.
For Torraval, it is a new cooling tower at a reference client such as ArcelorMittal, in addition to those already installed for this group in Spain and France, among other countries.
THE NEED
Arcelor Mittal Ghent’s Steelanol project onsists of an ethanol-fermentation plant where blast furnace gas converts into ethanol by a biological process. Heat is generated by the compression of the feed gas and by biological conversion, which is an exothermic process. These sources require cooling water to remove the heat from the process.
To dissipate this excess heat, ArcelorMittal needs to design and build a field-erected cooling tower to provide a continuous 24-hour/day service for a flow rate of 3700 m3/h with a water inlet temperature of 36°C and an outlet temperature of 25.9°C.
The wet bulb temperature in the town of Ghent is 21 ºC as an annual maximum.
THE CHALLENGE
The main requirements to be met by the tower are:
- Operational safety
- Low noise level
- Total accessibility to the points of the tower for maintenance purposes.
- To comply with the high standards and requirements of Arcelor Mittal Gante in terms of PRL.
The codes and standards applied throughout the project include:
- Local regulations
- European directives
- Client standards
- engineering project specifications
THE RESULT
- A field-erected cooling tower in a 2-cell pultruded glass fiber profile with an internal basin size of 12.5 m x 20.5 m is supplied.
- With a cooling tower structure extended to the basin floor
- With sound attenuators for the inner tower rain and acoustic screens on the roof for the fans
Ease of access to all elements requiring regular maintenance is present at all stages of the design.
The internal parts have hatches for access to the main elements of the cooling tower: mechanical group, distribution system, filling, and driflet-eliminator.
